AVID is an acronym for Advancement Via Individual Determination.  Although AVID is a high school program that prepares students for college, Shoesmith School students benefit from AVID Success Path–a version especially tailored for 5th and 6th grade students attending Chicago Public Schools ,that subscribe to the foundational principles on which AVID was built. AVID is a program that helps students get organized and get ready for the next grade.

AVID has helped me by getting organized. When my school first started the AVID program I was’nt sure how it worked , all I knew was that it was a program to help you get organized. So, then we started doing the AVID program every year and I got the hang of it.

When it is time for us to swicth our classes I look around and see other students carrying their AVID binders, I also see students with their shirts tucked in because that is a school rule.

If a person asked me about AVID, first I would ask them are they organized, if they say no, then I would tell them that AVID is a program that helps you get organized. I would also tell them that they should get a binder to help them stay organized.

If they say yes–I’m organized, then I would give them tips to stay organized , like to punch holes in papers that do not have holes and place them in their binders immediately. Otherwise, they might put them somewhere and forget where they put it, which could mean zero percent grades in the teachers’ gradebooks. But if they put it in their binders, then they wont lose it.

Tips for Time Management

  • Step One: The first step in time management is to find out what kind of person you are and how you spend your time. Are you a morning person or an evening person? What types of activities do you do on daily basis?

  • Step Two: You must keep all your activities in line with your goals while you are planning your week, also you must sit time aside between your homework and free time.

  • Step Three: You must always get the right amount of sleep you need. Some people need about six and ten hours of sleep each night to get their brain functioning during the day.

  • Step Four: You must have time to eat your meals you will be much more alert and productive when you are eating right.

  • Step Five: If you don’t get a chance to finish everything you must build a “catch up time” schedule. This is time set aside for you to finish things in your schedule that are taking longer than you expected. It is also time between back to back meetings or appointments for travel and overtime.

  • Step Six: You need a balance between work and fun. Too much work, and you will “burn out” and become less productive. Too much fun, and nothing will get done.

                  Goal  Setting

Do you want to go to college? Do you want to be “big”? Well, in order to be “big” you have to think big. That’s when GOAL SETTING comes to mind.  Sit in a place where there is peace and quiet. Think of something you want to do the most. This is the point where you have to think if your goal.  Is it going to be long term or short term? Long term means when your goal isn’t achieved until later on, it takes time to achieve it (like after high school). Short term means when you set a goal that is achieved in about a couple weeks or maybe a month.

Next, you’re going to need to figure out a plan. A plan describes how you are going to achieve your goal.  Remember to be specific.

Last, you have to take action.  You have to do what you described in your plan. Sometimes, your plan won’t work the way you planned it at first.  If that happens, you have to adjust–go back to the original plan and make changes.

You will feel amazing when you’ve achieved your goal. Goal setting can help you now; as well as,  help you in the future.  Now you know how to set your goals to become a successful AVID student.

AVID-is  a program  to help students  get organized. Also it is a program to get you ready for Middle school,  High  school and college.

AVID really helped me by getting really organized such as  finding all my assignments for reading, math, science, social studies  and writing. Also, AVID really helped me because I used to be  messy  but  now  I am the AVID Coach in my  classroom.  As AVID  Coach, I do binder checks  and  help  my classmates  with  their  binders.

My opinion about Shoesmith AVID  is that students try to be organized  and students  try to always have what  they  need in class.  This is important especially  when we are changing  class rooms.

AVID  teaches  you  how  to  manage  your  time effectively  by creating  a time management log. You get to see what you are spending time doing everyday.

If  someone  asks  me  about  AVID,  I will tell them AVID is  a  program  that  gets  you ready  by helping you to set goals for your future, getting and staying organized and managing your time.  All of those help students succeed in middle school, High school and college.

AVID is a program that is preparing students for college and it is teaching students how to be neat and organized at all times.  AVID helps students manage their time  wisely with their school work, and their free time.

AVID helps me alot.  Every since AVID came to our school , I have tried to be neat and organized at all times.  I have been able to manage my time more wisely between school work and my free time. For example, after school I go with my coach to my after school program and I set  aside to do my homework first and then to play sports.

At Shoesmith, AVID  is really helping students. Most students at Shoesmith are really changing every since AVID came to our school.  Their binders have been in order, they are always in uniform, and their attitudes have changed too. They are proud to wear their AVID polo shirts to show that they really love the AVID program. Their shirts are always tucked in their pants, they always carry their binders with them, and they are writing their homework down in their planners.

If any one asked me, “What is AVID?”  I will tell them that AVID is a program that helps students prepare for college and teaches them how to be neat.  I would also tell them that AVID is not just for kids; it is for teachers too.  AVID also helps teachers stay neat and organized.  AVID is a very good program for students and teachers.  AVID can help anyone become neat and organized, at any time.

AVID is a program for student who are preparing for college!

AVID helps by getting organized, having our supplies ready to go, and always having the right uniform.

You see students working on their classwork, having their shirts tucked in their pants, always paying attention to their teachers, and doing the right thing most times.

I would say AVID is for helping you prepare for college by setting goals and giving you the instructions on how to reach those goals.

I think AVID should continue at Chicago Public Schools so people can keep preparing for college.

AVID creates a classroom environment where kids are encouraged to take learning seriously and secondly see themselves as scholars.

AVID can help you in many different ways like when you go to class and turn to a section in your binder and be focused0n what you are doing. AVID teaches me  that one of the most successful tools for academic success is a neat, complete, and organized binder.

At Shoesmith School you can see the difference in students’ appearance.  Their shirts are nearly tucked in while some proudly wear their avid polo shirts with the avid logo displayed. In the hallway you can see students checking their binders to make sure that they have the work ready for that class. I would say that we are more organized than before AVID was introduced.
